The Ministry of Education (MOE) of the Government of India founded the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in November 1989 as an independent organization in correspondence with the National Policy on Education in 1986.
In addition to General and Academic Courses, NIOS offers a variety of occupational, life enrichment, and community-oriented courses at the secondary and senior secondary levels.

Through a gazette notice, the Government of India endowed NIOS with the ability to assess and certify learners enrolled at the pre-degree level in academic, Technical, and vocational programs. Association of Indian Universities, via letter E.V./11 (354)/91 dated July 25, 1991, granted NIOS’s Senior Secondary Certificate Examination Equivalence.
NIOS is an independent entity registered under the Societies Registration Act (1860). NIOS is headquartered in A-24/25, Institutional Area, Sector-62, NOIDA (U.P.). The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) policies are established by its General Body, which is chaired by the Union Minister of Human Resources Development.

Objectives of NIOS board
The National Institute of Open schooling Noida plays a crucial part in the National System of Education and has unique qualities. The primary goals of NIOS are:
● To advise the Government of India and the States on establishing the Open and Distance Learning System at the school level in response to requests from the appropriate Government/s or on its initiative.
● Construct Academic and Vocational Education Programmes for livelihood and lifelong learning up to the pre-degree level based on identified needs.
● To achieve excellence in creating high-quality Open and Distance Learning curricula and courseware for students.
● To certify schools to develop an effective learner support system to assist learning up to the pre-degree level.
● Through research and development, enhance the Open and Distance Learning System.
● To promote open education at the national and international level via networking, capacity development, resource sharing, and quality assurance.
NIOS courses/programs are open to everybody, regardless of caste, religion, or locality.
Prioritized target demographic includes:
● Rural and urban inhabitants

● disadvantaged segments of society, unemployed and partially employed individuals
● School abandonment
● Individuals with exceptional requirements, i.e., physically and psychologically handicapped individuals

Freedom to Study
NIOS primary aim is to “reach the unreachable.” The National Institute of Open schooling adheres to the notion of learner autonomy, i.e., the Learner decides what to study, when to learn, and when to appear for the test. There are no limitations on time, location, or speed of learning.

For Secondary and Senior Secondary Education Courses can apply online or via Study Centre, Facilitation Centre, and Regional Centre.
Twice a year, Public Examinations are administered. In five years, they gave the student nine examination opportunities. During this phase, a student may sit for examinations whenever they feel adequately prepared and may make use of the credit accumulation option.
The student also takes the On-Demand Examination.
After passing the first public test, a student can take an On Demand Examination from NIOS Regional Centre and at Kendriya Vidyalaya designated across India.
The courses and programs offered by the National Institute of Open schooling are functional, applicable to everyday life, and also pave the way for future study.
Alums of NIOS are pursuing advanced degrees at IITs, Delhi University, the Jamia Hamdard, the Jamia Millia Islamia, the Aligarh Muslim University, the Punjab University, Allahabad University, and several more prestigious institutes of higher education and professional institutions.
The management recognizes prior learning by permitting the transfer of up to two courses from International, National, and State Boards of Examination/State Open Schools with whom the NIOS has agreements.
Recognized Excellence in Education

The Government of India has granted the National Institute of Open Schooling the right to conduct Public Examinations and issue secondary and Senior Secondary level certificates comparable to any other Board of School Education.
The National Council develops A National Curriculum Framework for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), followed by all national or state boards.
The Council of Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are the other two boards (CISCE).
